Building the Bread Oven Foundations

I managed to get some stone from a skip to finish off the dry stone wall around the area I'm going to build the Bread Oven. It's heavy stuff is that stone- core blimey! Amazing what people throw away though!

Anyway, when I'd done that I dug 4" down into the ground to create the foundations for the Bread Oven. I then poured concrete into it until it was about 3" deep. I then leveled it off and whilst it was still wet, I set some paving stones into it. The paving stones are about 2" thick and I got them from my Mother's when she had her greenhouse removed. I used six paving slabs altogether.

As you can see from the pictures, I've laid some bricks down to make sure I build the Bread Oven the size I want it. I'll let you count the bricks in the photo whilst I have a cup of tea.

I keep getting laid off with the rain but once the base is laid I can start the brickwork.

Here's a bread oven I made earlier...

Here are some of the bricks me old mate gave me for the new bread oven. If you want to make your own bread oven then for safety reasons you must make sure you use the right bricks! The bricks you use should meet fire safety regulations so the best thing to do is ask your local building merchants to recommend some bricks for you.
Below and to the left you can see a photo of another bread oven I made earlier this year. We've had some great family get-togethers and the pizzas cooked on the oven taste amazing!

The previous oven I made is made from recycled materials that have been thrown out. The bricks from this one I got from an old storage heater, but I checked with my local merchants that these specific ones were okay to use. You should do the same. It's also important to use the right cement too! This project took me about two weeks and I worked on it in between working in the allotment. You will see from the photo that I also built a log store to keep the wood to be used as fuel dry.

Building and outdoor bread oven

Just started to clear a site for my next project – a bread oven in the garden. Unfortunately I was rained off today, but I thought I would update you with how I am getting on. This is more of a home based project as it is in my garden. Once I’ve cleared the area you can see in the photos I can start on building and leveling the surface. I am going to build this with reclaimed materials at very little cost so I will let you know how I go on. I’ve already collected 300 old bricks that my good old mate next door had left over from a recent build so I’m well on the way to getting this project started!

If you’re interested in the building of this then you might also want to find out more about the pizza oven I recently built on my allotment. I’ll post details about that soon!
